The Needle's Eye

Is This Furman or Clemson?

Come on now, guys. I get enough heart attacks from watching the Tigers every Saturday.

Furman 24, Richmond 20. The Fighting Paladins brought the Spiders' vaunted eight-game winning streak to an abrupt halt with a defense that stepped up when it had to and an offense that did just enough to win the ballgame. My MVPs of the game go to Justin Stepp (11 catches, 148 yards) and William Freeman, who was a locomotive on defense, bulldozing his way through the line and plowing into Richmond's QB Stacey Tutt (a.k.a. "King Tutt").

Despite how, clearly, we were the better team (Tutt is a talented QB, but we win games on the strength of the team; no players more or less important than the others), Furman still managed to keep us back at home on the edge of our seats. I grew very concerned when Scott Beckler missed two FGs, one of which came early in the fourth quarter when we were up 24-14. Make that FG and it's 27-14, and that might have done the Spiders in.

Anyway, they got a TD on a perfectly-threaded pass, and then we gave them the ball back. We seemed poised to flop in a way typical for a Furman playoff team. But our embattled defense wouldn't allow it. Facing fourth and 2 deep in our territory, our secondary knocked down Tutt's final pass, and we ran out the rest of the clock and sealed the win. Up next is our mountain nemesis, Appalachian State. And it's on the road too. Lord, have mercy.
